DNS records keep reverting to “proxied DNS” against my wishes

What is the name of the domain?

gators4.me

What is the issue you’re encountering

/I keep manually changing A record DNS to “DNS only” but the system reverts back to “Proxied DNS” after a few days. How do I make it stay on “DNS only” permanently? I’m using to access my home VPN which doesn’t work through Proxied DNS.

What feature, service or problem is this related to?

DNS records

What is the DNS record? Your apex domain doesn’t have one and www CNAMEs to the apex domain…

Are you using a dynamic DNS updater to set the IP address using the Cloudflare API? If so, check that you have configured that to set “DNS only”.

Otherwise check your audit log for the details of the change…

Here’s what I’m trying to do: Run pfSense router at home. Use Dynamic DNS on pfSense to update home.gators4.me with the current IP of my home. Then I can use WireGuard when I’m away from home and point to home.gators4.me to reach home. I have dual failover WAN at home and I want to be able to connect back to home if my primary WAN fails and/or my ISP changes my home IP. Thank you for helping!

When the A DNS record changes from “DNS only” to “Proxied”, I can no longer connect to home.

Cloudflare only proxies HTTP/S traffic so your VPN won’t work when proxied.

According to this link, there is a checkbox in pfSense to enable the proxy so make sure you have it unchecked…

Wow, it’s that simple? I’m so sorry I missed that. I’ve been reading for hours, asking Perplexity.ai, and cussing. All for a stupid checkbox I missed. I’ve held off posting and tried to figure it out myself. Thanks so much for taking the time to answer. I bet that’ll fix the issue.

Am I being stupid by having the public IP exposed so that I can VPN into my home network?
