DNS problems? Working with 8.8.8.8

I was mid update on my laptop when DNS queries started timing out and stuff. I’d set it up to use 1.1.1.1 and as a fallback 1.0.0.1.

90% of the time hkg.mirror.rackspace.com does not resolve:

$ dig hkg.mirror.rackspace.com @1.1.1.1

; <<>> DiG 9.18.18-0ubuntu0.22.04.2-Ubuntu <<>> hkg.mirror.rackspace.com @1.1.1.1
;; global options: +cmd
;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NXDOMAIN, id: 8883
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 1

;; OPT PSEUDOSECTION:
; EDNS: version: 0, flags:; udp: 1232
;; QUESTION SECTION:
;hkg.mirror.rackspace.com.      IN      A

;; Query time: 12 msec
;; SERVER: 1.1.1.1#53(1.1.1.1) (UDP)
;; WHEN: Mon Apr 29 16:53:52 UTC 2024
;; MSG SIZE  rcvd: 53

Other times it works fine:

$ dig hkg.mirror.rackspace.com @1.1.1.1

; <<>> DiG 9.18.18-0ubuntu0.22.04.2-Ubuntu <<>> hkg.mirror.rackspace.com @1.1.1.1

In comparison, 8.8.8.8 has 100% success rate. I asked a friend in different region to try it as well to make sure its not my ISP somehow. I am in HKG.

Hello there!
Maybe it was a temporary issue of some sort, as I just tried it both via prompt and on a web interface, against Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 resolver, and both returned successful results:

dig hkg.mirror.rackspace.com @1.1.1.1

; <<>> DiG 9.10.6 <<>> hkg.mirror.rackspace.com @1.1.1.1
;; global options: +cmd
;; Got answer:

You’re right, it was probably just temporary, but it lasted for (at least) 20 minutes. I was just a bit surprised since there was no report of it on the status page. Guess it’s a one-off.
