We’re exploring DNS Management options for some .pt domain names we’ve recently acquired directly through the .PT Platform and Cloudflare is currently at the top of the list.
It indicates that domains purchased directly from .PT require a kind of a stopgap DNS Server setup for activation and validation on .PT’s end before adding it to Cloudflare. Taking into account the topic is 6 years old, I’m hoping this is no longer an issue. Has anyone been in a similar situation recently? If so, can you confirm whether the aforementioned workaround is still necessary, or if it’s now possible to add .pt domains directly to Cloudflare?
Thanks in advance!

Contact your .PT domain registrar and clarify if there are any changes in the process of adding domains to Cloudflare .
As far as I know, domains .PT can be added directly to Cloudflare without the need for additional time settings.
The fundamental issue here is that Cloudflare nameservers are assigned only at the time the domain is added to Cloudflare. So the same “stopgap” issue exists for ANY new domain you register outside of Cloudflare, you’ll always have to use some other nameservers initially when registering the domain… and later replace them with the new pair Cloudflare assigns when adding the domain to Cloudflare.
This is often not an issue because most registrars automatically use their own nameservers when registering domains. It only becomes apparent when using ccTLDs that don’t run their own authoritative nameservers and thus require the registrant to provide their own nameservers before they can register a domain.
Use ANY pair of nameservers to register the domain .pt (eg if you have another domain in Cloudflare, use the pair assigned to that domain)
After the registration, add the domain to Cloudflare. Even if you used Cloudflare nameservers to register the domain, Cloudflare will assign a new pair of nameservers when adding the domain.
Go back to the place where you registered the .pt domain and replace the nameservers with the new pair Cloudflare gave you.
Thanks for the help! The whole thing ended up being a tempest in a teapot. Was able to add the .pt domains to Cloudflare directly without any problems. As a matter of fact, only had to enter Cloudflare’s Primary Nameserver on the .PT Platform (the Secondary Nameserver was fetched automatically). Just in case someone else has the same question in the future, the workflow should be as follows:
01 - Register the domain directly through the .PT Platform (https://www.pt.pt/).
02 - Add the domain to Cloudflare.
03 - Enter Cloudflare’s Primary Nameserver in the .PT Platform (“TECHNICAL SETTING->Automatic Fetch Configuration->Fetch Configuration” option).
04 - There’s no step 04, :).
