Cloudflare says that it is for “(new registrations)”, in the table from Screenshot #1.

Transfers are NOT new registrations.

IME Cloudflare charges the same price for transfers, as renewals and new domains; the fact that the only prices being show in the products/registrar page are the ones in Screenshot #1 tends to corroborate that.

But OK, so let’s say transfers are a different price. Where can I see the prices for transfers? As I’ve just explained, they aren’t present in their proper place (ie the aforementioned – and recorded in my screenshot – products/registrar page).

But that experience is not correct.

If you wish to dig deeper in to that, you can for example look at other TLD’s like e.g. .party, or .win.

For the past ~ 2 years, new registrations has steadily been ~ $1 below the cost for renewal, no matter if we’re looking at Cloudflare, or any other registrar.

Not really?

The table you see in Screenshot #1 serves as an illustration, to show that Cloudflare claims that they are charging exactly what they are charged by the registry, for new registrations.

What would tend to corroborate that, is:

  1. Screenshot #1 only lists a couple of TLD’s, and not all of them.
  2. Screenshot #1 clearly says “(new registrations)”.

Registration, renewal, and transfers are three different prices.

It’s the same at every other registrar, if you’re looking at the .org TLD, - both renewal nor transfer go at around ~ $10 'ish and up.

When going through the transfer process, like you did in Screenshot #2.

My understanding was that you were talking solely about the discrepancy in price, which was caused by the misunderstanding that new registrations and transfers would be two different things.

There are no place for them, except from going through the ordering / transfer procedures, as you did with Screenshot #2.

Cloudflare Registrar does not advertise the prices for the individual TLD’s publicly, like some other registrars do.

Thanks for your reply and additional clarifications.

On a personal note, I don’t think it’s a good idea to ‘hide’ the prices ‘inside’ the process itself so that, to see the price, the customer has to go through at least the start of the process with no exact idea of what price he’s going to pay – this is at the very least time-wasting. That’s why prices should always be displayed prominently and for all to see, just like (as you commented) most (not just “some”) “other registrars do”. In fact, I can’t think of a single other registrar that doesn’t publish their prices out in the open without forcing the customer to go through the process to see them.

But point taken, and things are as they are, not as we want them to be. If that’s the way Cloudflare prefers to do business, so be it – those that don’t like it can always take their business elsewhere.

Thanks again. I’m marking your answer as the “Solution” to my question.

I can only say that I completely agree here.

Compared to the kind of “transparency”, that Cloudflare gives in many other ways, I am also under the impression that this specific part could be improved.

Yeah, “a lot”, or even “most” might have been a better word there.

I believe I’ve seen several in my time, that were requiring you to log in to your account, or if you were new, then register an account, in order to be able to see them.

Another thing to remember though, -

The eventual addition of VAT during the the transaction could also affect the price quite a bit, depending on where you’re from, and so forth.

(But hopefully, that would be clarified well enough, during the process, if the difference would be due to the addition of VAT.)

You’re welcome! I’m happy I could be of assistance.
