Deprecation Notice: Cloudflare Server-side Excludes - effective June 14th, 2024

Dear Cloudflare Community

We are wanting to inform you all that Cloudflare will be sunsetting the Server-side Excludes (SSE) feature on June 14th, 2024.

As part of our ongoing commitment to provide you with the best security features and performance, we occasionally make decisions to discontinue services that no longer meet the evolving demands of today’s web environment. After June 14th, 2024 Server Side Excludes will no longer be available via the dashboard, API, or Terraform.

Why is Server Side Excludes Being Deprecated?

Server Side Excludes relies on customers writing code within their HTML in conjunction with Cloudflare’s Threat Score for IP addresses. Over the past 12 years, since the launch of SSE, it has become increasingly easier to acquire IP addresses in an attempt to bypass IP reputation in order to scrape content. This is why Cloudflare has released more intelligent products such as Bot Management, which includes features like Cloudflare Turnstile to catch and block bots from accessing content.

What You Need to Do

If you are currently using SSE, you can choose to disable it now through your Cloudflare dashboard, or it will be automatically disabled on June 14th, 2024.If you deployed the <!-sse-> and <!-/sse-> code comments to your page markup, you may wish to remove these. Your requests via Cloudflare will not be impacted only we will not longer obfuscate content within the tags.

Moving forward, if you are experiencing unmitigated bot attacks or content scraping, we recommend transitioning to our Enterprise-grade Bot Management or our self-serve Super Bot Fight Mode solutions. These services are specifically designed to provide superior security in handling bot attacks and other security threats. For detailed guidance on migrating and leveraging these advanced solutions, please visit our Developer documentation on Bot Management and Super Bot Fight Mode.

We understand that changes like this can be challenging, but we are here to help and I am happy to answer any questions you may have.

Kind regards,

Matt Bullock
