DDOS Protection questions

Hello community,

Im new to Cloudflare and im looking to see if its in my interest to work with Cloudflare, now im mostly interested in securing my sites and I saw that Cloudflare has DDOS security.

My question is as following, do I need to have my domains on the Cloudflare system to have DDOS protection or only the connection with Cloudflare will do?
