Configure External DNS to point to Cloudflare hosted website

We have acquired a domain that is registered, and hosted with CloudFlare. In order for us to integrate into active directory we need to move registration and DNS over to our company registrar and DNS. We had planned to leave the website hosting on Cloudflare but I’ve been told that the site will only stay active if the DNS stays with Cloudflare. Is this correct? I’ve done this with many other web hosts and normally you can enter the proper A Record information on the new DNS to point back to the website.

That is correct, unless you use a CNAME setup (Business or Enterprise required), see details of this configuration here: https://support.cloudflare.com/hc/en-us/articles/360020348832-Understanding-a-CNAME-Setup
