Community Tip - Email alert, origin unreachable

Background
As an unreachable server is not a desirable situation, Cloudflare offers a series of tools & services to address this issue:

  • Standalone Health Checks, notifies you as soon as we detect problems at your origin server, without needing a Cloudflare Load Balancer. Users on the Pro, Business, or Enterprise plan have access to Standalone Health Checks and Health Check Analytics. Access Standalone Health Checks and Health Check Analytics through the Traffic app in the Cloudflare dashboard.
  • Passive Origin Monitoring, available to customers on all Cloudflare plans, lets you know when your origin cannot be reached, with no configuration required.
  • Zero-Downtime Failover, the default behavior for customers on Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans, can automatically avert failures by retrying requests to origin.

Details

  1. Configure origin monitoring alerts for multiple email addresses in the Notifications Center of the Cloudflare dashboard.

  2. Make certain your host is not rate limiting or blocking Cloudflare IPs, and check for errors in the log. If you’ve just moved to Cloudflare or for other troubleshooting suggestions, see the Community Tip - Fixing Error 521: Web server is down referenced below.
