Community Tip - Best Practices for Change Username, Account name or to Remove your accounts

Use Case
Try the suggestions in this Community Tip for best practices when attempting to update your Cloudflare user name on the Cloudflare Community and Cloudflare Customer Support as well as how to change your real name on your Cloudflare Account and how to change your Cloudflare Account Name.

Background
When you sign up for Cloudflare with an email address that looks like [email protected], your Cloudflare Community and Cloudflare Customer Support usernames will be “username” and your Cloudflare Account Name will be Username’s Cloudflare Account.

How To Suggestions

  1. To change your Cloudflare Community username. Navigate to the :gear: icon by your image and select the :pencil: icon to edit your user name. Your Preferences page is located at: https://community.cloudflare.com/u/USERNAME/preferences/account (replace “USERNAME” with your Community username). You can change your Community user name for three months from the time you create your Community account. After that, login to Cloudflare and then contact Cloudflare Support to have your Community user name changed. Please include your first and second options for your desired user name. Better yet, make sure the name you want is available, go to this address, replace USERNAME with your desired user name https://community.cloudflare.com/u/[USERNAME]. If you see a page with “Oops! That page doesn’t exist or is private,” the name is available.

  2. To change your Cloudflare Customer Support username. The username you use to interact with Cloudflare Customer Support is generated from the local-part of the email address you used to create your Cloudflare account (the part to the left of @). To change your Customer Support username, login to Cloudflare and contact Cloudflare Support and ask Customer Support to change your username. Please include your first and second options for your desired user name.

  3. To Change your Account Name. If your account is named something like [email protected] or Username, login to your Cloudflare account and select Configurations from the main menu. From the Configurations menu in the Account Name section, click “Change Name” to change your Account Name.

  4. To remove your Community account, post on this site and at mention @MoreHelp and request that your account on the Community be removed. We’ll ask you to verify the details and then will remove your account.

  5. To delete your Cloudflare dashboard account, follow the “Delete Account” link at the bottom of your profile page to initiate deletion. We ask for your email (to confirm the account), your password (to confirm your identity), and that you enter the word“ delete ” (to confirm your intent), and a captcha (to confirm you’re human). Before you remove your account, be certain to:
    1. Cancel your subscriptions or add-on services
    2. Remove your domain from Cloudflare
    3. Remove Cloudflare nameservers at your domain registrar. If you are using a Cloudflare CNAME setup, update your DNS records at your DNS provider to point to your website IPs or hostnames instead of Cloudflare.
    4. Download your invoices from the billing section in your Cloudflare Dashboard if you have any.
    5. Delete payment information. Please keep in mind that you cannot remove payment information if you have active paid Cloudflare payment plans or subscriptions for Cloudflare plan extensions.

  6. To change the name on your Cloudflare account. From a Terminal, call the Cloudflare API with your email address, password, API key, and desired name. The syntax of the cURL command varies slightly based on your operating environment:

Linux:

curl -X PATCH "https://api.cloudflare.com/client/v4/user" -H "X-Auth-Email: [email protected]" -H "X-Auth-Key: " -H "Content-Type: application/json" --data '{"first_name":"FIRST","last_name":"LAST"}'

Windows:

curl -X PATCH "https://api.cloudflare.com/client/v4/user" -H "X-Auth-Email: [email protected]" -H "X-Auth-Key: <MY API KEY>" -H "Content-Type: application/json" --data "{\"first_name\":\"FIRST\",\"last_name\":\"LAST\"}"

If you get a ‘Malformed JSON Request’ error on Windows, you may need to escape the " with a \ as explained in this Stack Overflow post.

For example:

curl -X PATCH "https://api.cloudflare.com/client/v4/user" -H "X-Auth-Email: [email protected]" -H "X-Auth-Key: " -H "Content-Type: application/json" --data "{\"first_name\":\"FIRST\",\"last_name\":\"LAST\"}"

This is the only way I could get this command to work for me.
