Cname to store on shopify not working

Hi,

We have a few domains which are on Google DNS. One of these domains (let’s say domain1) points to our Shopify store.

We’re testing moving one of these domains (not our main domain - let’s say domain2 which has a CNAME pointing to domain1) to Cloudflare, with a view to moving all of our domains to Cloudflare in the future.

For testing I’ve forwarded the DNS for domain2 to Cloudflare, and copied the zone file over (the domain registration still sits on Google, but we’d like to move it to Cloudflare once everything is up and running and confirmed working).

If I now visit domain2 I get an error stating:

"There was a problem loading this website

Try refreshing the page.

If the site still doesn’t load, please try again in a few minutes."

The same domain worked when hosted on Google DNS.

To me, that looks like a Shopify error. Shopify support says they can’t help with the problem, and can’t even identify the problem. Any ideas what the issue is?

If you haven’t done so already, I’ll recommend you put the zone in DNS-Only mode ( :grey: ) which disables Cloudflare’s Proxy (:orange:) and all CDN/WAF services.

With this, Cloudflare will merely be resolving the domain to your configured Shopify IP address or hostname, and make it easier to attribute the source of errors and resolve them.

Thanks. It works in DNS only mode.

The plan is to eventually move our main domain name (the one that has an A name to Shopify) to Cloudflare. We’d like to have Proxy etc turned on for that domain.

Are we going to see the same problem on that domain as we’ve seen on this one? (I’m trying to figure out if this is a cname problem, or something else?).

You cannot proxy connections to Shopify unless you have an Enterprise plan, because Shopify is already using Cloudflare.
