The problem is that I had a CNAME record to another domain from the same cloudflare account, all good and working.

I moved a domain to another cloudflare account, and everything stopped working. The domain is registered with Cloudflare.

I moved it to the original account, and it was not working either. I tried to delete the domain from the account I moved it to, and it won’t let me, as it detects that it has a Zone configured, when the domain is no longer in that account.

To get out of the way, I pointed it to the IP of the server, and everything works, but now I have the same domain in two Cloudflare accounts. It looks like a BUG.

And what exactly is your goal now? Do you want to get it working with the CNAME in the same account, with CNAME in different accounts or do you want to keep pointing it via an A record and just delete the domain from one account?

Hey, just read your post — sounds super frustrating.

From what you described, it does seem like Cloudflare’s internal zone mapping/cache didn’t clean up properly when you moved the domain between accounts.

That lingering zone config might be why the CNAME validation thinks it’s still in use, hence the Cross-User Banned response — even though both domains are technically in your control.

You might want to open a support ticket directly with Cloudflare and reference the zone IDs of both accounts. I’ve seen cases where they need to manually clear “ghost” zones like this.

Definitely feels like a bug — especially since you now have the same domain visible in two accounts.
