Cloudflare showing connection timed out but server running normally

Hi,
I am trying to set up a small website for my network security undergraduate project. I set up an Azure server and installed an Apache server on it and got the public IP of my server as: http://13.90.153.31/. I got a DNS service and registered on cloudflare with website name as : http://cloudhiding.tech/.

It was working perfectly fine when I set it up, but now when I open the website, it shows Connection timed out, but if I access the server directly with the IP, the webpage opens normally. I tried clearing Cloudflare’s cache as well, but to no avail.

Can someone please help me out?
Thanks,
Richi.

It’s running at my side

Loads fine for me too

It might be that you are experiencing a DNS propagation issue, in which case you just need to wait. However one issue is your server is not configured for HTTPS, so you’ll never get it to be secure (if this is important). You’d need to configure your server for HTTPS in this case.

Thanks a lot for your reply. It still shows Connection timed out for my chrome browse (and not for my firefox). You mentioned about DNS propagation issue, can you explain more about it please? Shouldn’t my browser be getting new DNS anyways since it has been more than a day now!

Post the output of these commands

ping cloudhiding.tech
ping www.cloudhiding.tech
nslookup cloudhiding.tech
nslookup www.cloudhiding.tech

However, that does not seem to be a browser error but rather something straight from your website. Alternatively it could be a local proxy too.

In that case it’s most likely a Chrome issue. Generally I’d rather recommend Firefox anyhow. You could only try a new Chrome profile or maybe disable extensions.

Thanks a lot for your reply again. I am sorry, I didn’t mention that even in Firefox it sometimes shows Connection timed out, while sometimes it doesn’t.
Some days ago, I changed my nameserver settings in ubuntu to test out a DNS software (called DNScrypt) and I did not reset the settings. Can this be a problem? If yes, why is it so random then? Sometimes in Chrome’s Incognito. the website opens but other times it doesn’t.

My output for the commands are:

nslookup cloudhiding.tech

The IPv4 resolution seems to be fine, though the IPv6 address does not seem to be correct. It resolves to a Cloudflare address, but seemingly not yours and as your machine seems to prefer IPv6 that could be the issue.

If you say you changed your DNS configuration then this could easily be the issue. I would suggest you double check that and make sure you have a proper DNS setup and verify the addresses you resolve.

At this point it really is not a Cloudflare issue I am afraid but something about your local configuration.

Hi sandro, Thanks a lot for your reply again. I changed my DNS setting to 1.1.1.1 and everything works fine now!

You said the IPv4 seems to be fine, but could you explain this please? Like I said earlier, the IP address of the machine is 13.90.153.31 but my nslookup earlier showed :
Name: www.cloudhiding.tech
Address: 172.67.193.205
Name: www.cloudhiding.tech
Address: 104.27.169.131
Name: www.cloudhiding.tech

Why are both of them different from each other? And if neither of them matches 13.90.153.31 then how is the IPv4 address correct? Also, how is it that my machine prefers IPv6? Can we change the preferences somewhere?

Please let me know. Thanks!

That is a completely different issue though. Please check out Why does a DNS lookup on my domain not return the IP address I configured? as that is covered there. I’d also recommend to check out support.cloudflare.com
