Cloudflare routing North American traffic through Japan

I currently have a configuration using a cloudflare free plan and fly.io. Over the past 24 hours, when using cloudflare to proxy traffic, any and all requests from North America ended up using the Tokyo, Japan datacenter for fly.io.
It has now resolved itself back to using the appropriate region’s datacenter but this behaviour is still concerning nonetheless.
I am aware of the Anycast network’s peering system and have read about other users experiencing ISP related rerouting to a closer proxy, however Tokyo seems much further than expected. Any clarification from anyone who has experienced something similar would help greatly.
