Cloudflare registrar + Linode VPS = failed DNS lookup

What is the name of the domain?

What is the error message?

Command nslookup is not outputting my Linode’s IPv4 address. It says “Non-authoritative answer”

What is the issue you’re encountering

Hi I purchased a domain from Cloudflare’s registrar. I would like this domain name to direct to a server that I have running on a Linode VPS. I am noob and can’t figure out how to do this.

What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?

In the Cloudflare dashboard, I went to Manage Domain > Update DNS Configuration and created an A record. I sent the A record’s name to @ and used the IPv4 provided by my VPS. It’s been several days and command nslookup still fails.

I also tried going to the Linode dashboard and creating a Domain Zone. But I really have no idea what I’m doing. The nameservers listed are ns1.linode.com/etc. I suspect I’m only making things worse.

I want to transfer my domain name to a different registrar, as it looks like Hover/NameCheap/etc. would simply let me point my domain’s nameservers to ns1.linode.com/etc., and the DNS resolution would work within 48 hours. However, it looks like I have to wait 60 days before I can do something like that. I am looking to deploy my app to the web ASAP.

What feature, service or problem is this related to?

DNS records

DNS looks all good to me, see here: DNS Checker - DNS Check Propagation Tool

Maybe start by changing the proxy status of the DNS record to DNS-Only until you’ve got everything running. Right now, your webserver just times out.

I’d also recommend you change the SSL setting on Cloudflare to Full (strict) if you haven’t already done so.

None of the IPs listed by the DNS Checker are the same as the public IP address provided by my Linode VPS. (Sorry for any confusion, I am probably not phrasing some of this stuff correctly)

That’s because your record is proxied - these are Cloudflare’s IP addresses.

Aha! I see, hiding my public IP from the world is probably a good thing. Thanks so much.
