Cloudflare Polish converting favicons to webp, which is not a supported type

What is the name of the domain?

What is the issue you’re encountering

Cloudflare Polish is taking a favicon in png format and converting it to a webp. Unfortunately webp is not a valid favicon format. This means consumers like Google are not showing the icon in search results: Favicon - Wikipedia

What are the steps to reproduce the issue?

Enable Polish. Use a png image as a favicon that is larger than the webp that Cloudflare can generate.

Check the network headers to see that it is being converted to webp.

See if Google will show the logo in search results.

This is happening on a CMS that has Cloudflare built in, where the site owner has no controls over Cloudflare. I suspect this issue would hit many sites using this CMS, as well as all sites where Polish is enabled.

My website doesn’t have this option, the favicon simply disappeared from the page.

You should be able to create a Configuration Rule that matches the favicon paths and selectively disables Polish.

Good to know, however this is a version of Cloudflare provided by the CMS, with no access to configure it.

I will raise the option with the CMS.
