On May 14th around 13:45 UTC, several of Cloudflare’s Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules that prevent fake search engine crawlers began intermittently blocking legitimate Google, Bing, and Yandex crawlers. To resolve, Cloudflare engineers reverted an upstream change regarding information delivery into the Cloudflare WAF. However, due to deployment issues, the full rollback took longer than anticipated. We are actively implementing rigorous testing to ensure the integrity of upstream information passed into the WAF prior to new deployments. We are also reviewing our deployment and rollback processes to mitigate deployment delays.
