Cloudflare keeps changing my cname from @ to the name of my domain

What is the name of the domain?

What is the isssue you’re encountering

I’m trying to add a cname record called @, but whenever I click save to save my changes, Cloudflare changes the cname to the name of my domain. This is causing Ghost to be unable to identify my domain and to point my website.

What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?

I deleted the record and added it from scratch, selecting ‘cname’ then giving it the name @ and then adding the correct value, and clicking save. But whenver I do this, Cloudflare changes the name of the record to my domain name rather than leaving it as @. I’m feeling stuck and unsure what to do.

What feature, service or problem is this related to?

DNS records

Whenever you add ‘@’ in the name field which simply would refer to the root domain. Therefore, the change is very common.

As already noted, it is expected that @ will be displayed as your domain name once the record is saved.

Do you have a link to the guide you are following so we can review it and possibly offer suggestions?

Yes, I understand that it’s simply referring to the root, but wondering if the substitution is causing issues. I would prefer that it not be happening.

That’s not an option, but it is also definitely not the cause of your trouble.

Thanks for linking to their setup guide. They have another guide linked from that one that is specifically for use with Cloudflare. You will see there that it is crititical to only use :grey: DNS Only hostnames. Give that a try and let us know if that works.

If you want to learn more about how Cloudflare handles a CNAME at the apex, this guide to CNAME flattening explains it.

I see what you’re saying! I have set them to be DNS only, not proxied. Once that propagates, we will see how it goes. Thank you for your help thus far.
