Changing Nameservers to connect Kajabi website

What is the name of the domain?

What is the issue you’re encountering

Hi, I am trying to connect my domain to my kajabi website while keeping the domain with cloudflare. When looking over the instructions on Kajabi it says to delete the nameservers (see image) and to ADD “jermaine.ns.cloudflare.com” and “joyce.ns.cloudflare.com” … but when I go to the DNS records, there is NO OPTION to delete the first two, especially since there isn’t a way to “edit” or click on those names. I also have no idea how to add the other two. Are they CNAMEs? or something else? When I put this request into the AI bot, it tells me to click on the 3 elliptical dots, but there are NO elliptical dots to delete the previous ones. It also says to add the new nameservers first, but Iknow nothing about DNS record stuff, so I am not even sure how to “add” in the new names. Please help :frowning:

What feature, service or problem is this related to?

This domain was registered through Cloudflare.

If you want to delegate your domain to other name servers, then the domain must be transferred out of Cloudflare first.

6.1 Nameservers. Registrant agrees to use Cloudflare’s nameservers. REGISTRANT ACKNOWLEDGES AND AGREES THAT IT MAY NOT CHANGE THE NAMESERVERS ON THE REGISTRAR SERVICES, AND THAT IT MUST TRANSFER TO A THIRD PARTY REGISTRAR IF IT WISHES TO CHANGE NAMESERVERS.

7.2 nameservers

I will suggest you to contact Kajabi, and request that they provide the relevant DNS record(s) (typically such as AAAA, A or CNAME), and then adjust your DNS record(s) so they match that instead.

According to their documentation, it seems like a CNAME record pointed towards “ssl.kajabi.com” may be all you need for the website.

Thank you for your help, I super appreciate it! I do have some further questions, if that’s ok.
These are the instructions from Kajabi. If cloudflare doesn’t allow me to change the name servers (without switching it out) why would Kajabi tell me to do that? Especially if the new nameservers still end in cloudflare.com? If that question makes sense? There has to be a way, but do I just need to add the NS records and then wait 24-hours?

response

Also, can you help me understand this a little better? Again, I apologize, I know hardly anything about DNS records. Thank you for your help!

So I suggest you to try that, and ignore all the stuff about name servers, NS records, and so forth.

There are multiple different ways (each with their pro’s and con’s) for how you can onboard your (sub-)domains on to platforms.

With a plan such as Cloudflare Free, and Cloudflare Pro, Cloudflare require that you use their name servers.

The name server assignment connects the domain to your Cloudflare account, so if you could, and were actually going to change name servers, as the screenshot instructs you to, then your domain name would have been moved away from your Cloudflare account, and would then be residing in Kajabi’s Cloudflare account.

Whether that means you have access to your domain through Kajabi’s Dashboard, or that you have lost all control over your own domain name, is something you need to figure out with the individual platform, e.g. Kajabi in this instance, - but you will at least lose the access to maintain your own domain, from your own Cloudflare account, by doing that.

So I’m suggesting you ignore any advice to change name servers, or NS records, and onboard your domain to e.g. Kajabi, using any of the other methods available (whenever that is possible), so you still retain full control over your own domain name.

Re.

To figure out why Kajabi is doing what they are doing, you will need to ask Kajabi.

A hosting provider is generally in more control over the domain name, when the name servers are delegated towards them.

If they are switching the IP address of one or more servers related to the services they run for your domain name, they can update the IP addresses in your DNS configuration, without your own interference.

In a lot of situations, a CNAME will give a similar benefit for them.

However, AAAA and/or A records would require your manual interference, if your hosting provider is switching IP addresses for some reason.

Something along the lines of e.g. “administrative ease without the customer's own interference” may very be the reason.
