Can't add records to DNS

Hey, I want to add records to DNS however, if I try to follow the steps on cloudflare a triangle with an exclamation mark appears and says: ‘This hostname is not covered by a certificate.’ And then, when I try to add a root (@) I can’t continue because of the following message: ‘DNS Validation Error (Code: 1004) CNAME content cannot reference itself.’ What does this mean for me? I have ‘purchased’ my domain and received confirmation that it has been activated. Any idea why I can’t follow the steps further? Looking forward to hearing from you, thanks in advance!

Can you share the exact record (name, type, content, …) you’re trying to add here?

This sounds like you are trying to pointing @ (the apex, naked domain, root domain, …) towards the actual domain you have.

For example, if your domain is example.com, then @ would be referring to example.com.

Pointing @ (of example.com) to example.com will therefore not work, as it would be referencing back to to itself.
