AWS EC2, Subdomain and New to Cloudflare

Here’s where I am right now.
I have an EC2 server that is acting as the front-facing “server” for a web app.
Domain management is handled with a 3rd party
There is a subdomain A-record that resolves to the EC2 IP address that is managed by the 3rd party.

I am considering using Cloudflare to provide DDOS and possibly WAF protection, while also leverage the most cost effective approach to using an SSL certificate.

Any recommendations on how to use and setup a subdomain with Cloudflare?
The root-level domain website is hosted in ANOTHER hosting provider - would it be easier to setup Cloudflare to protect the root-level website along with subdomain that I am most interested in protecting?
