Assistance with SOA Record Settings

What is the name of the domain?

What is the error message?

DNS: SOA Serial Number Format is Invalid
DNS: SOA Expire Value out of recommended range

What is the issue you’re encountering

I am currently using Cloudflare’s free plan for my domain and email DNS records and recently ran a test using MXToolbox to check my DNS settings. The test found some issues related to my SOA settings: 1) SOA Serial Number Format is invalid; 2) SOA Expire Value out of recommended range.

What steps have you taken to resolve the issue?

I have not take any step yet but I would like to know if there are any steps I can take to fix these issues, or if there is additional support for free plan users to fix these issues. Could anyone tell me how to check and correct the SOA serial number and expiration values and how to make sure my DMARC settings are configured correctly?

What feature, service or problem is this related to?

In short, that’s a false warning and your setup is working all right.

Hi,

These are just opinionated recommendations that, in my opinion, are completely safe to ignore. (In particular the wording of the “SOA Serial Number Format is Invalid” message bothers me—there is nothing invalid about our serial numbers.) The default Cloudflare settings will work just fine.

We do provide an API for changing SOA values, but it’s currently only available to Foundation DNS customers. This may or may not change in the future.
