Adding new SSL Certificate

About the Cloudflare SSL certificate, when would the certificate expire? And at what point will I have to pay? If there is a tutorial or info page, please send me the link.

Cloudflare’s “Universal SSL” is completely free forever. CF believes that SSL should be free since all it does is make sure the website connection can’t be snooped on by anyone sitting in-between the client and server, such as people monitoring public wifi or the ISPs themselves.

Hi @Judge,

Thanks for your reply. However, I am going to use it for e-commerce. Would CF SSL be good enough for ecommerce?

There is (quite literally) no difference between different types of SSL certificates. Each certificate, no matter how much you pay for it, does what it’s supposed to: encrypt the connection between the browser and your server. Even EV certificates are pretty worthless as Safari no longer shows the EV company name, and Chrome is testing completely removing any EV indicator from the address bar.

Hi @john58,

Apologies you didn’t get a reply before now.

Cloudflare will automatically renew the certificate on their edge so you will not need to worry about that expiring. To make the connection secure, you will also need a certificate on your server, this can be one from your web host or cert authority, a free one from Let’s Encrypt or a free Cloudflare Origin Certificate. The Cloudflare Origin Certificate is only valid if you are proxying your site through Cloudflare, however it can be valid for up to 15 years.

The free plan remains free, unless you want to purchase a higher plan or more features, you will not have to pay.

Edit: Didn’t see the other thread where you did get a response! Merged them now.
